Depart Portland PDX at 7:30pm on British Airways BA 266. Overnight transatlantic to London Heathrow (LHR). Connect onto BA 578 to Milan Linate (LIN).
Total flight time: 14h 5m. You arrive Milan Linate the following evening — next-day arrival at 6:35pm.
Pack light — you'll be moving between Milan, Bellagio, Palermo, and Scopello, much of it by train and ferry. One bag per person makes everything easier.
Arrive at LIN (Linate) Aug 26, depart from MXP (Malpensa) Sep 6 — different Milan airports, 50km apart. Malpensa Express from Cadorna runs every 30 min, ~40 min to MXP.
You move between Milan, Bellagio, Palermo, and Scopello, much of it by train and ferry — and every flight is carry-on-only. One bag per person makes everything easier.
Touch down at Milan Linate (LIN) at 6:35pm. Small, easy airport — immigration and baggage move fast. No rental car — you won't pick one up until Sep 2 at Palermo airport (to drive to Scopello). Linate sits right on the edge of the city: a taxi to the apartment is ~20 minutes (€20–25), or the M4 metro runs from inside the terminal straight into town.
Tonight you stay in Milan, not Bellagio — at "Rail24," Via Cappellini 14, near Milano Centrale (smart-lock self check-in; message Federica for the code). After a 14-hour travel day, don't add a lake transfer on top. Drop your bags, walk out for dinner, sleep. Being by Centrale makes tomorrow's train to the lake easy. Bellagio is tomorrow.
Aperitivo in Navigli or a quiet dinner in Brera is the right speed tonight — low effort, good food, early to bed.
You travel car-free until Sep 2. Milan is metro + taxi; Milan→Bellagio is train + ferry; Palermo is walkable; Sep 1 Cefalù is by train. Pick up your rental car Sep 2 at 10:00am from the Budget desk at PMO airport to drive west to Scopello, and drop it back at PMO on Sep 4 before flying to Milan.
No car, and you don't need one — this is one of the great easy journeys in Italy. From Milano Centrale take a regional/regionale train toward Sondrio/Tirano and get off at Varenna-Esino: about 1 hour, frequent departures, scenic along the lake's eastern shore.
From Varenna it's a short walk down to the ferry dock. Take the passenger ferry across to Bellagio — ~15 minutes. You arrive right at Bellagio's waterfront, steps from the old town. The crossing into Bellagio with the villas rising off the water is the best single moment of the travel day.
Buy train tickets at the station or the Trenitalia app; ferry tickets at the Varenna dock. Time your departure so you reach Bellagio comfortably before the 3:00pm check-in — a Varenna lakeside lunch en route is the move.
Check into Ca' Adriano at 3:00pm — full address, confirmation, and entry details are in the Lodging card below. Then it's recovery and a gentle look around town before tomorrow's wedding.
Keep it gentle. You crossed 9 time zones two days ago and you're still catching up.
Tomorrow is the wedding. Tonight, rest.
Milano Centrale → Varenna-Esino by train (~1 hr), then the Varenna → Bellagio ferry (~15 min). Simple, scenic, frequent. Alternative: a pre-booked private car transfer door-to-door (~1.5 hrs) if you're carrying heavy luggage and want zero changes.
Miranda Schryer and Oliver DeThier are getting married at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, Italy.
The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni sits on the tip of the Bellagio promontory with panoramic views across both arms of Lake Como. Built in 1873 — one of the great historic hotels of northern Italy.
Check the event details and timing via the official wedding website as the invitation follows.
Airbnb checkout is 10:00am on Aug 30, and you have a flight to Palermo that afternoon. Getting from Bellagio back to Linate takes time (ferry + train, or a private transfer). Be packed and out by 9:00am — don't let the post-wedding morning derail the departure to Sicily.
Last full day at the lake before Sicily. Morning coffee on the water, light lunch. No agenda.
Sicily starts tomorrow. Different country feel, entirely different pace. Prepare for heat and chaos.
Airbnb checkout is 10:00am. Getting to Milan Linate takes time (ferry + train or a private transfer). Pack everything tonight — morning is just coffee and go.
Checkout by 10am. Get back to Linate either by ferry to Varenna → train to Milano Centrale → taxi/M4 to LIN, or — better on a flight day with luggage — a pre-booked private transfer door-to-door (~1.5 hrs). Book the transfer the night before and confirm the pickup time.
Allow 2hrs at LIN before departure — check-in, bag drop, through security. LIN is small but can back up at peak times. Build in buffer for the ferry/train if you go that route.
ITA Airways AZ 1793 — Milan Linate (LIN) 17:00 → Palermo (PMO) 18:35. Nonstop, 1h 35m, Economy Light. Booking ref ZOTOFZ. Be at LIN by ~3:00pm. Economy Light = 1 personal item + 1 × 8kg carry-on, no checked bag — pack accordingly.
Arrive Palermo 6:35pm. No car needed — train to Orleans station (10-min walk) or Palermo Centrale (15-min walk), or a taxi the host can arrange. Check into Stefano's Central Suite, Vicolo Castelnuovo 11 (check-in after 1:00 PM, building staff). Dinner tonight in the Kalsa or Vucciria quarter — skip the tourist strip, walk until you smell something good.
Round-trip Linate ↔ Palermo on ITA Airways. Out: AZ 1793, Aug 30, LIN 17:00 → PMO 18:35. Back: AZ 1772, Sep 4, PMO 11:00 → LIN 12:40. €323.18 total, Economy Light (carry-on only).
Palermo is walkable and well-served by taxi. Sep 1 Cefalù is by train — no car needed. You don't pick up a rental car until Sep 2 at 10:00am, and it's out at PMO airport — not in the city. Don't bother with a car in Palermo — parking here is its own punishment.
Ballarò is the oldest and most authentic street market in Sicily — start here at 8am before the heat. Street food for breakfast: arancini, panelle (chickpea fritters), sfincione (Sicilian pizza). Wander without a map. Crowd: 3/5
Ballarò is genuinely alive. It's not a tourist market — it's where people buy their groceries. Eat whatever the vendors are selling, not what has a sign in English.
The Palazzo dei Normanni (Palace of the Normans) and its Cappella Palatina (Palatine Chapel) are the defining monument of Sicily. UNESCO World Heritage Site. The chapel interior: 6,500 square meters of gold Byzantine mosaics — the finest Norman-Arab-Byzantine artwork anywhere on earth. Budget 2 hours here, minimum.
Book tickets in advance. The palace is still the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly — access times vary. Buy online before the trip. Crowd: 4/5 — arrive at opening, avoid weekend midday
Mondello is Palermo's beach, 20 minutes by car or bus from the center. In August it is crowded and the parking is chaotic. Go late afternoon — the light is better, it's slightly less packed, and you get sunset over the bay.
Mondello is worth it once. The water is clear and the setting is beautiful. Just don't go at noon and expect a relaxing experience.
Same as Option A morning. Ballarò at 8am — arancini, panelle, sfincione. Absorb the chaos. Best morning in Palermo regardless of which afternoon you choose.
Monreale is ~20 minutes southwest of Palermo by car. The Cathedral of Monreale (UNESCO) has mosaic cycles that rival — and some argue exceed — the Palatine Chapel in scope. The Benedictine cloister is extraordinary: 228 carved columns, Arab-Norman architecture, and a garden that feels genuinely ancient. Much quieter than Palermo center.
The best sequence: skip the Palatine Chapel today, do both Monreale and the Normanni on different days if you have flexibility. If you're here only once, the Palatine Chapel is the priority. Monreale is the better day trip — more to explore and far fewer people than the cathedral. Crowd: 2/5
Insane parking situation in August — double-parking everywhere, cars blocking streets. Go late afternoon or take a taxi/bus. Do not drive there at 11am on a weekend.
Tickets sell out for peak morning slots in August. Book at federicosecondo.it before the trip. Aim for 9am entry for the best light and smallest crowds.
Walk or taxi to Palermo Centrale and take the Trenitalia regional train east along the coast to Cefalù. Trains run roughly every 1–2 hours; the ride is about 50–60 minutes. The coastal approach into Cefalù — the limestone headland rising above the sea — is excellent. No rental car today.
Buy tickets on the Trenitalia app or at the station. Roughly €5–7 each way. Check the timetable the night before.
Head straight to La Rocca when you arrive — no café stop first. The trail starts from Piazza Garibaldi, climbs steeply: 45 min up, 30 min down, fully exposed ridge. Do it now, before 10am. The view looking down over the Norman cathedral, the beach arc, and the sea is the best single image in Cefalù. Crowd: 2/5 before 9am · 4/5 after 10am
The Cathedral of Cefalù (UNESCO) is one of the finest Norman churches in Sicily. The apse mosaic of Christ Pantocrator — gold background, monumental scale — is among the greatest medieval images in Italy. Smaller and more intimate than Monreale, and genuinely beautiful. Budget 45 minutes. Crowd: 3/5
Then: waterfront lunch on the Lungomare, browse the narrow lanes behind the cathedral.
Cefalù's beach is just east of the cathedral — sandy, clear Mediterranean water, town backdrop. Spend an hour or two, then catch the late-afternoon train back to Palermo. Tonight is your last Palermo night — tomorrow you head out to PMO airport, pick up the rental car, and drive west to Scopello.
The trail is fully exposed and genuinely hot by 10am. Go straight there when you arrive — no café stop first. Come down, then do the cathedral and beach. The sequence matters.
Cefalù is walkable and needs no car today. But note tomorrow's logistics: the rental is at PMO airport at 10:00am, not in the city, and your Airbnb checkout is also 10:00am. Plan to be out the door by ~8:30am — the airport bus from Politeama takes ~50 min. Pack tonight.
The car is at the airport, not in the city — so this morning starts with a transfer out to Falcone-Borsellino (PMO), about 35 km northwest of the center. Checkout at Vicolo Castelnuovo is 10:00am but you need to leave well before that: aim to be out the door by 8:30am.
Three ways there, all roughly 45–50 minutes:
— Prestia e Comandè airport bus — departs Politeama (a short walk from the apartment) every ~30 min, about €6.30 each. Easiest option.
— Trinacria Express train — Palermo Centrale to Punta Raisi, ~€6, but you'd walk or taxi to Centrale first.
— Taxi — fixed airport rate around €45–50. Worth it with luggage and a fixed pickup time.
Volkswagen T-Cross (or similar) from Budget, booking 752660381. The desk is inside the terminal — on-airport, so no shuttle. Automatic, 5 seats, 4 doors, air conditioning, unlimited mileage.
Bring the credit card in the driver's name, both licences, and your passports. Budget will place a hold on the card for the security deposit — a debit card usually won't work. Photograph every panel, the wheels, and the windscreen before you drive off.
Good news about the airport pickup: PMO is already west of Palermo, so you skip city traffic entirely. Take the A29 toward Trapani, exit Castellammare del Golfo, then SP63 to Scopello — about 40 km, ~40 minutes.
Stop for lunch at Castellammare del Golfo, right at your exit. A working harbor town wrapped around a little castle: park above the port, walk down, eat at the water. Eat properly here. The afternoon is booked at the Tonnara and Scopello itself is only a handful of restaurants.
The final stretch along Golfo di Castellammare is stunning — mountains dropping straight into the sea. Scopello is the last tiny road before the water. Park outside the village gates; no cars inside the hamlet. Aim to be in the village by ~1:45pm.
Check in at Via Armando Diaz 7 from 2:00pm — host Marisin. Don't get comfortable: drop the bags, change into swimsuits, and go. You have a sunbed waiting at the Tonnara.
The village is essentially one stone lane, so unpacking takes about five minutes. Scout where you want dinner on your way down.
Confirmed for Sep 2 by Ivana, reservation no. 14842. The old tuna fishery sits in its own private cove just below the village, with the faraglioni (the limestone sea stacks) rising straight out of the water. It's the postcard shot of western Sicily, and because you booked, you're not fighting anyone for a spot.
Swim, snorkel around the stacks, and stay for the late light — the cove faces so that the afternoon is when it's best, and the day-trippers thin out as it goes. Entry is over stone and pebble rather than sand, so bring water shoes or sandals you can swim in.
Snorkeling: work the bases of the faraglioni, not the open middle of the cove. The rock walls and boulder piles are where everything lives — wrasse, damselfish, saddled bream, urchins in the crevices, the occasional octopus tucked into a hole. Visibility is best when the water is calm, so if it's flat when you arrive, get in first and take the sunbed afterward.
It's a short walk down from the village (or a very short drive). +39 0924 1866101 · info@tonnaradiscopello.it
Straight up from the Tonnara, salt still in your hair. Scopello has a few small restaurants — straightforward Sicilian: pasta with anchovies, grilled fish, local wine. Nothing fancy. Early to bed: the 8:30am Zingaro entry is the whole point of tomorrow.
Airbnb checkout is 10:00am and the Budget pickup at PMO is also 10:00am, with ~50 minutes of travel between them. That doesn't work as written — be out the door by 8:30am. Pack the night before and take the Politeama airport bus or a taxi. Budget will hold the car if you run late, but the whole day slides with you.
Booking 752660381. Bring both driving licences, passports, and — critically — the credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit hold. Debit cards are usually refused at Italian counters. Photograph the car's panels, wheels, and windscreen before leaving the lot.
Your Sep 4 flight departs PMO at 11:00am — standard checkout is also 11:00am. Message Marisin before the trip and confirm you can leave by 9:00am. PMO is ~50 min from Scopello. Get it in writing.
The Tonnara is a small ticketed cove, not a beach-services operation. There's a dive agency inside that books boat trips and dives, but walk-up mask rental is not something to bank on. Buy a mask and snorkel before you fly — they pack flat, cost very little, and they serve you twice: here on Sep 2 and again at Cala Capreria in Zingaro on Sep 3. Add water shoes for the urchins.
Cetaria Diving Center is based right in Scopello village and runs guided snorkel and dive excursions by boat along the Zingaro coast, hitting caves and coves you can't reach on foot. They rent gear too. Boats leave from Castellammare del Golfo port. Worth a look as a Sep 3 alternative if you'd rather be on the water than hiking. cetaria.it
The sunbed booking (no. 14842) makes the Tonnara a fixed point this afternoon, which is the right call — it's the one thing here that's better booked than winged. Leave Zingaro alone today. It deserves the dedicated 8:30am start tomorrow, and trying to do both in one afternoon ruins both.
Drive or walk the ~2km from Scopello to the south entrance (the one closest to town). Entry: €5/person. Fill water bottles at the visitor center — there is nothing to buy inside the reserve. The trail starts with a short uphill from the visitor center, then levels along the coast.
Confirm opening hours before the trip — they vary by season.
The first cove from the south — short walk in, turquoise water, good snorkeling. Swim here while it's still quiet. Move on before 9:45am — crowds hit by 10–10:30am and the cove is small. Crowd: 3/5 by 10am
Continue north. The trail gets rockier and quieter fast. Cala del Varo is a brief stop; push on to Cala della Disa — wider, pebble beach, far fewer people. This is the main long swim + snack stop. Budget 1.5–2 hrs here. Crowd: 1–2/5
No shade anywhere on the trail. By the time you're here the sun is intense — stay hydrated and watch your water supply for the walk back.
No shuttle, no loop — walk back the same way to the south entrance. The return takes roughly the same time as going in. Save enough water and energy for the walk back before you turn around. Back at the entrance ~2:00–2:30pm.
Drive or walk back to Via Armando Diaz. Shower, rest, decompress. Dinner tonight in Scopello village — you've done the hard part of the trip.
Dinner in Scopello village. Then pack everything tonight — tomorrow is an early start. Confirm early checkout with Marisin if you haven't already. Leave nothing to the morning except coffee and loading the car.
San Vito Lo Capo is 30 minutes north of Scopello along the SP63. A long, wide arc of white sand at the foot of Monte Monaco promontory — clearest water in northwest Sicily, less crowded than Mondello, better quality beach. Arrive early for the best spots. Crowd: 3/5
Spend the full day at the beach. Seafood lunch in the village — the couscous with fish (Arab-Sicilian tradition from the Trapani area) is worth ordering. Return to Scopello by late afternoon.
Dinner in Scopello village. Pack everything tonight. Leave nothing to the morning — tomorrow you need to be in the car by 9:00am.
Your flight is 11:00am and checkout is 11:00am — you must leave by 9:00am with early checkout arranged. Pack everything tonight. PMO is ~50 min from Scopello. Nothing to the morning except coffee and loading the car.
2+ liters of water per person (fill at the visitor center before entering). Sturdy shoes — the trail is rocky and uneven. Sunscreen + hat. Swimsuit, towel, goggles. Food and snacks for the full half-day. Confirm opening hours at federicosecondo.it or the reserve's site before the trip — vary by season.
The entire coastal trail is fully exposed. By midday the return leg is brutally hot. 8:30am entry is the latest sensible start if you want to reach Cala della Disa and walk back comfortably before the heat peaks.
No slow breakfast today — the flight is at 11:00am. Be up early, grab a quick coffee, and be on the road by 9:00am (early checkout already arranged with Marisin). Scopello to PMO is ~50 min, giving you buffer to fuel up and return the car before the flight. Checkout is self-service — just leave the room as instructed.
Pack the night before. Plan to grab something at the airport instead of sitting down for breakfast.
Drive east: SP63 toward Castellammare del Golfo, then A29 east toward Palermo, following signs to Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (PMO). Return the car to the Budget desk in the terminal — same place you collected it, and don't go into the city. Drop-off is booked for 10:00am, exactly 2 days out. Aim to be at the airport by then: ~50 min drive plus a quick fuel-up (top it off near Castellammare — there's no cheap fuel at the airport) and the return walkaround. That leaves a solid hour before the 11:00 flight.
You won't have Palermo time today — make sure the final sights (Vucciria, Quattro Canti, Palazzo Abatellis) get done on Aug 30–Sep 1.
ITA Airways AZ 1772 — Palermo (PMO) 11:00am → Milan Linate (LIN) 12:40pm. Nonstop, 1h 40m, Airbus A220-300, Economy Light. Booking ref ZOTOFZ. Note Economy Light: 1 personal item + 1 × 8kg carry-on, no checked bag included — pack accordingly or add a bag in advance.
Land at Linate at 12:40pm — just 30 min from the apartment (M4 metro to Tricolore, 3-min walk to "Cosy Home Piazza Tricolore," Via Guicciardini 4, or a ~20-min taxi). You're in central Milan by early afternoon.
The early flight buys you a full Milan afternoon. Apartment check-in is 3:00pm (lockbox) — drop or store bags, grab a late lunch near Piazza Tricolore, then walk the center: Duomo, San Babila, or an early Navigli aperitivo. Tonight is decompression; tomorrow is your full Milan day.
Scopello is ~50 min from PMO airport. Leave no later than 9:00am — that gets you to the airport by ~9:50am with time to fuel up and return the car. Checkout is 11:00am by default: arrange early checkout with Marisin before the trip.
Even with the early flight, the second Milan night (Sep 5) is the buffer — if the morning slips, you still have a full clear day before the Sep 6 flight home. No same-day connection risk, and you gain a Milan afternoon today.
Piazza della Scala 6, right by the Duomo. A grand former bank with a beautifully lit collection and a cheap ticket. About an hour is plenty, and it's a gentle way to start a last day. Open Saturday until 7 pm. Crowd: 2/5
Five minutes from Piazza della Scala. Skip the rooftop climb and its timed ticket. Just go through the cathedral interior, then the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade next door. 30 to 45 min for both. Grab lunch in the center after.
Via San Vittore 21 in Sant'Ambrogio, a tram ride southwest from the center. This is the priority of the whole day, so give it the big block. da Vinci machine models built from his own sketches, plus the rail, air, and naval pavilions.
Saturday hours run to 7 pm, so take a full 2.5 to 3 hrs and don't rush it. Best single stop of the day.
Via Santa Marta 11, only a 10 min walk from the Leonardo museum, so the timing lines up cleanly. Old-school Milanese since 1933. Risotto giallo (saffron), ossobuco, cotoletta.
Small and popular, so book ahead. The main room runs more local than the side room. Price: €€€.
Ripa di Porta Ticinese 49, right on the canal. Cocktails and natural wine, a well-made spritz, chill interior. Open Saturday until 2 am.
Via Corsico 5, a 2 min walk from GRAMM. Vinyl listening bar, great cocktails, sometimes a DJ. The right way to close out Italy.
It's small and it fills up, especially on a Saturday. Reserve before the trip, or at the latest that morning.
Two museums is the whole plan. The da Vinci museum is the one to actually linger in, so let everything else stay loose.
Just don't try to run this on a Monday, when both Gallerie d'Italia and the Leonardo museum are closed.
Checkout from Cosy Home is 11am, but you'll leave earlier for the flight. Take the Malpensa Express from Milano Cadorna (or Centrale) — every 30 min, ~40–50 min to MXP. For a 12:35pm departure, be at the gate by ~10:30am, so leave the apartment around 9:00am.
That's it. End of run. Italy in late summer is exactly as advertised.
British Airways home, MXP → LHR → PDX. Total 14h 5m, one stop. BA 583 (Airbus A321neo) Milan Malpensa → London Heathrow, then a 1h 55m LHR connection, then BA 267 (Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner) Heathrow → Portland, landing PDX 5:40pm the same day.
Fare: Basic Economy (class O). Carry-on bag included; checked bags available for a fee; non-refundable; seats not pre-assigned. Traveler: Gabriel Eland Collins.
Malpensa Express from Milano Cadorna/Centrale, every 30 min, ~40–50 min to MXP. Be at the gate ~2 hrs early (10:30am) for an international departure — leave the apartment ~9:00am. The Express beats a taxi at rush hour. Heathrow connection is 1h 55m — tight-ish for an international transfer, so don't dawdle at LHR.
BA Basic Economy includes a carry-on only. If you're checking bags home (likely, with the wedding), add checked bags to the BA booking in advance — cheaper than at the airport. Same goes for the carry-on-only ITA legs within Italy.
